Meet Sam, a Lead Engineer at GE Intelligent Platforms in Illinois who took our Intro to Data Science course. Sam shared his Udacity experience with us:
Key to Success: Study Buddy!
I signed up to Udacity with my project manager so that we could discuss and work through the material together. We scheduled regular times during the week and it really helped to keep a fast pace through the material. Best decision ever! Next time I’ll organize an office study group, it’s far more fun than doing it ‘single-player’ and helps with commitment.
Keep In Mind:
Real data is never pretty. Most raw, real-world data that I’ve handled is equivalent to a pile of post-it notes that have fluttered down a quarter-mile stretch of busy road. Expect to wrangle it into shape… and if you don’t have to then your weekend schedule suddenly cleared up. I liked that the dataset for the final project in the Intro to Data Science course was a real-world dataset and the wrangling had all the symptoms of a real-world headache.
Why should you take Intro to Data Science?
Intro to Data Science helped me tune some essential skills in data mining, gave me a crash-course review in Python, and helped me grow some relationships with co-workers. Only cost a few hours during week nights and weekends – definitely a win!
What are your plans for the future?
As my girlfriend says, “Lo mismo que hacemos todas las noches – Tratar de dominar al mundo!” (The same thing we do every night – Trying to dominate the world!)
Honestly? I’d like to do a few more courses and then start an full-time MBA or PhD.
If you enjoyed reading Sam’s story and want to have one of your own, sign up for one of our courses. We recommend Intro to Data Science for anyone who wants to get started with a career in Data Science.
