New survey data reveals how artificial intelligence is creating opportunities—and challenges—for working moms.
In today’s rapidly evolving workplace, working mothers often find themselves juggling multiple responsibilities while striving for career advancement. A new survey ahead of Mother’s Day from Udacity sheds light on how artificial intelligence is becoming an unexpected ally for these hardworking professionals, though challenges remain in fully harnessing its potential.
The AI Advantage for Working Moms
Ahead of Mother’s Day, we surveyed more than 1,600 professionals to better understand how AI is impacting their work, with a special focus on working moms across various industries and job functions. Their responses revealed how using AI in their work is creating tangible benefits in their daily lives:
- 70% of working moms report improved productivity
- 55% experienced reduced stress levels
- 32% say it has given them more time with their families
- 29% enjoy better work-life balance
- 12% have seen an increase in compensation
The Skills Gap Challenge
Despite these benefits, our research uncovered a concerning trend: 52% of working moms in our survey believe a lack of AI skills may have prevented them from receiving a promotion or landing a new position in the past year.
This skills gap comes at a critical time when AI skills are increasingly valued in the workplace. 40% of working mothers say AI will replace their current role within 3-5 years, underscoring a clear imperative to build these skills now.
Optimism Amid Change
Despite concerns about job security, working mothers remain optimistic about AI’s potential to improve their lives. 65% say the advent of generative AI helps them feel better about their ability to provide for their families.
The frequency of AI use at work among working moms is notable:
- 49% use it multiple times per day
- 11% use it nearly everything they do
A Family Affair: Intergenerational Learning
Perhaps one of the most fascinating findings from our research is how AI skills development has become a two-way street between working moms and their children:
- 2 in 3 working moms say they have taught their children how to use generative AI
- Just over half (51%) of working moms say their children have taught them AI skills
This intergenerational knowledge exchange represents a unique aspect of AI adoption that will be critical as working moms and their families move through this particular digital skills transformation.
Bridging the Gap
These findings highlight both the tremendous opportunities and real challenges working mothers face in an AI-powered workplace. While AI is already delivering meaningful benefits to working moms, we need to ensure they have access to the training and skills development necessary to fully capitalize on these tools.
