At Udacity, we believe everyone should have access to the skills that power technology careers — and that includes the busy, dedicated moms who are juggling seemingly unending responsibilities while forging futures in tech.

The path to a tech career isn’t always linear, especially for mothers who often face unique challenges as they balance caregiving and upskilling.

We’re constantly inspired by these mothers. Their resilience, determination, and adaptability drive us to do what we do.

Ahead of Mother’s Day 2025, we want to share a few of these journeys with you — from six inspiring moms who are forging their futures in tech.

Starting Fresh in a New Country

For Monica Duran Martinez, relocating to Germany as a single mother meant dealing with language barriers and an international law degree that didn’t transfer to a new country:

“As a single mom who recently relocated to Germany, starting over wasn’t easy—especially with only intermediate German and a law degree that doesn’t apply here. I needed a flexible, remote-friendly career to support my family, and that’s when I found this course. It gave me the skills, confidence, and tools to begin a new professional journey in web development on my own terms.”

Through Udacity’s Introduction to Web Development course, Monica found a path that transcended language and geographic barriers, opening doors to remote work opportunities.

Finding Learning Opportunities in a Busy Schedule

For Xing Li, developing new technical skills while balancing a Ph.D. program and motherhood seemed nearly impossible. The structured, bite-sized approach of Udacity’s Data Analyst Nanodegree program made all the difference:

“As a mom with young children and a Ph.D. student, finding time to learn something new felt nearly impossible. But this course made it manageable—the content is broken into small, structured segments that fit into my busy schedule. The personalized feedback on projects was especially valuable, helping me see exactly where to improve and how to grow.”

Xing demonstrates how the right educational structure can help mothers develop new skills at a pace that fits into their packed schedule.

Maria Milman Moschenko, who recently finished Udacity’s Data Scientist Nanodegree program, shared a similar experience:

“As a part-time working mom, finding time to learn felt impossible—until I found Udacity. The flexibility let me learn at my own pace and helped me advance towards the career change I’d been dreaming of!”

Maria’s journey into data science shows how tech education can adapt to the unpredictable rhythms of motherhood, rather than the other way around.

Overcoming Barriers with Determination

For some mothers, the tech industry represents not just a career path, but a solution to significant life challenges. Sabrina Palis, who completed our Generative AI and AI for Healthcare Nanodegree programs this year, tackles motherhood and career growth while facing a disability:

“As a woman and mother living with a disability, I felt overwhelmed by the uncertainty of my future when it came to finding meaningful, flexible work. Udacity changed everything.”

Sabrina’s story reminds us that tech careers can offer the flexibility and accessibility that many mothers need, particularly those facing additional challenges.

Returning to Work with Confidence

The journey back to professional life after having a child can be daunting. Many mothers worry about skills gaps or how they’ll balance their new responsibilities. Jordan Shephard, who recently landed a job as a senior product manager last month after completing our Data Scientist Nanodegree program, found that upskilling was key to her successful return:

“I  recently became a mother and wanted to upskill before returning to work. Udacity’s course was essential for me to get the confidence to get back into the job market.”

Rediscovering Personal Growth After Years of Family Focus

After years of prioritizing family needs, many mothers find themselves ready to invest in their own growth and development. Jennifer Franzoi’s experience with our Introduction to Python course represents this powerful journey of personal rediscovery:

“After years of dedicating myself to my family, I’m finally taking steps toward what I truly want for me. Getting back into studying after so long was a challenge—but it’s been so worth it. Udacity made the process easier and more accessible with flexible, well-structured content that fits into my life as a mom. I’m excited to keep going.”

Celebrating All Tech Moms This Mother’s Day

These stories represent a small fraction of the thousands of mothers who are building new skills and forging futures in tech. Their journeys may differ, but they share common threads of resilience, determination, and the courage to pursue growth despite obstacles.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate these mothers and all the others who are coding late at night after bedtime stories, analyzing data during nap times, designing websites while supervising homework, and building their tech skills in whatever moments they can find.

To all the mothers forging futures in tech: We see you, we celebrate you, and we’re honored to be part of your journey!
