If 2020 were a movie, it would be a nail-biting thriller. The kind of movie that is rife with twists and turns. But 2020 has been as real as it can get. And despite all of the unforeseen events that unfolded this year, people have shown that they can be resourceful, resilient and innovative.
In fact, while the year posed many challenges, it also led to the adoption of new habits and trends. One of these was the explosion of online learning during 2020. While millions of people around the world lost their jobs, many also decided to upskill themselves to prepare for the post-Covid world.
At Udacity, we witnessed a surge in the enrollment for our Nanodegree programs in 2020. These trends not only show the interest areas of our learners but also the trends that will guide the job market. Keeping this in mind, we decided to share some of these trends with you.
Teaching at the forefront of technology—as we at Udacity are fortunate to do—is both exciting and challenging. To fulfill our promise to our students, it’s critical we maintain the up-to-the-minute relevance of our content at all times. Given how fast technology changes, this process is pretty much ongoing, every day. Sometimes the changes are minor; an upgrade here, a new version there. Other times, the opportunity presents itself to engage in a significant program overhaul.
A Complete Path to a Data Career
The launch of our Data Foundations Nanodegree program (now the Business Analytics Nanodegree program) presented just such an opportunity. The addition of this new program has made it possible to now offer a complete path to a data career. But, changes to other programs in our data ecosystem—which now includes many programs including the Predictive Analytics for Business, Data Engineer, and the Data Scientist Nanodegree programs —were necessary to fully optimize this path for our students.

The simple truth of digital marketing is that every business must engage in it to succeed in today’s world. Over $70 billion is already being spent on digital advertising in the U.S. alone, and this number is expected to grow by over 40 percent in the next four years. Yet despite its ubiquity, mastery of all the various tools, techniques, rapidly evolving platforms, and products that make up a successful digital marketing strategy is challenging to achieve, and a holistic understanding of how digital marketing really works can be elusive. So the field remains crowded with specialists, even as demand for multi-channel fluency increases dramatically. To address this, what is needed are new learning opportunities for digital marketers who want in-depth coverage of all the main platforms in one place, in a framework that focuses explicitly on the most important thing of all—the customer journey. If you want to learn digital marketing and break into this industry, we have the right program for you .

The excitement around our Machine Learning Nanodegree program has been amazing to witness, and the vitality and dynamism in the space right now is pretty incredible. There are so many fascinating storylines in the world of Machine Learning, it’s sometimes hard to even know what to focus on. But unquestionably, the people working in this field—those individuals at the cutting-edge of these new technologies—are a critical part of the Machine Learning narrative. One of the things I find personally really exciting is how many women are shaping the future of Machine Learning. My former colleague Katie Malone is a wonderful example of this, and I’m very grateful she was able to take some time recently to talk Machine Learning with us!
