Today, we are proud to announce our new Hybrid Cloud Nanodegree program, developed in collaboration with Nutanix to expand cloud and engineering skills. Our partnership with cloud computing software leader Nutanix has enabled us to thoughtfully produce a Nanodegree program that will enhance learning opportunities in the emerging cloud technologies — essential to any organization upleveling its IT infrastructure. To ensure this Nanodegree program is accessible to all interested participants, we are also opening 10,000 applications to a Hybrid Cloud Scholarship Program.

As increasing services move to cloud functionality, the need for cloud infrastructure expertise increases. In fact, nearly 90% of companies rely on cloud computing, with total spending on cloud services estimated to hit $97 billion last year. In that context, Hybrid Cloud has emerged as an especially critical technology that enables IT teams to manage cloud services that stretch from on-premise to the public cloud. At the same time, education has not kept up with this emerging technology, providing few learning alternatives that are specific to the hybrid cloud space.

Witnessing both the rapid speed of cloud reliance and the growing gap in cloud education, Nutanix and Udacity have collaborated to carefully craft a Nanodegree program which will advance the knowledge of seasoned IT staff. Ideal students are those managing traditional business applications, legacy infrastructure, or cloud-native applications on public cloud infrastructure. To bolster professional development in the space, the Nanodegree program will cover modern private cloud infrastructure and the design of hybrid application deployment.

“At Udacity, we strive to empower professionals with the most in-demand, forward-looking skills in their fields,” said Udacity CEO Gabe Dalporto. “We’re delighted to team up with Nutanix, a pioneer and leader in the cloud computing field, to create the new, cutting-edge Hybrid Cloud Nanodegree Program.”

The scholarship is structured in two phases. From the initial pool of applicants, 5,000 students will be selected to participate in the Hybrid Cloud Fundamentals course. From this group, 500 high-performing students will be awarded a full scholarship to the Hybrid Cloud Nanodegree program.

“One of our primary goals at Nutanix is to ensure that cloud technology professionals continue to stay on the cusp of innovation in this developing field,” said Wendy M. Pfeiffer, CIO at Nutanix. “We are excited to have worked closely with Udacity to develop the Hybrid Cloud Nanodegree program, and now open access to thousands of leading cloud professionals through this scholarship program.”

Given its subject matter, a prerequisite for the Nanodegree program is being comfortable with command line on Linux or Windows. Additionally, a background in working with VMs and/or AWS/GCP cloud is a plus. While all are welcome to apply, students from IT staff backgrounds will be ideal candidates.

For more context, the Hybrid Cloud Nanodegree Program will focus on four subject areas:

  • Modern Private Cloud Infrastructure: Learn to configure and manage a hyper-converged infrastructure cluster, providing a scalable, distributed storage, network, and compute fabric for virtual machines and advanced services.
  • Hybrid Cloud Application Design: Learn about the evolution of hybrid cloud workload management and design for multiple infrastructures.
  • Automating Private Cloud: Create a scalable web application and life cycle operational model with governance to enable on-demand, self-service workloads on-prem with fiscal oversight and quotas.
  • Designing Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure: Learn public cloud concepts, manage hybrid workloads, and drive to global load balancing of workloads.
