Udacity - Data Scientist Nanodegree program

The role of Data Scientist has become vastly more important in recent years, as our connected world continues to produce a staggering volume of data that is immensely valuable, but also increasingly challenging to measure, analyze, and transform into actionable insight. If you are trying to learn data science, the field has never been more open.

Skilled Data Scientists who are able to build machine learning models, run data pipelines, design experiments and recommendation engines, communicate effectively to stakeholders, and deploy data applications, are in high demand across industries as diverse as agriculture, conservation, education, finance, healthcare, social services, and transportation.

The field of data science is brimming with opportunity, and today we introduce our new Data Scientist Nanodegree program. This is the next step in our ongoing mission to provide opportunities for learners across the globe to master valuable and in-demand data skills. As Udacity COO Clarissa Shen said when announcing the new program during her keynote at The Next Web Conference:

“There is a massive talent gap in data science. Companies all over the world, and across virtually every industry, have thousands of open positions in the field, and they can’t find enough qualified candidates. And they look to us to help.”

75 Billion Connected Devices

The business of life and work today transcends borders. In the blink of an eye, communications are sent from one side of the globe to another. Millions of transactions happen every second, between people and companies separated by entire continents. Recent estimates suggest there will be more than 75 billion connected devices by the year 2025. Technology has gathered us into a single global community. But with this connectivity come challenges.

To do good in the world, we must understand the world. And to understand a world that runs on data, we need skilled translators who can transform the numbers into ideas, actions, and objective truth.

Demand for Data Scientists

The opportunity to leverage data in the service of progress has never been greater, but the challenge of doing so has never seemed more immense. This is why LinkedIn put skills like Analytical Reasoning, Artificial Intelligence, and Business Analysis on their list of Most in Demand Skills in 2020, and why our partners at IBM are predicting that demand for Data Scientists will surge nearly 30% in just the next two years.

What is needed is a new generation of Data Scientists—uniquely qualified individuals armed with deeper skills in machine learning, who can turn data into action, and power organizations worldwide to be more efficient, more effective, and more impactful.

Starting today, this new generation of Data Scientists can master the necessary skills in the Udacity Data Scientist Nanodegree program.

Real-World Projects Built with Industry Leaders

To develop this program’s world-class curriculum, we collaborated with data-powered innovators such as Bertelsmann, Figure Eight, IBM, Insight, Kaggle, and Starbucks, each of whom has contributed their expertise—and their datasets!—to the projects our students will build. Examples include:

  • Bertelsmann: Bertelsmann subsidiary Arvato Financial Services provided a massive dataset for a marketing project focused on customer segmentation, and are eager to explore hiring top performers in the program.
  • Figure Eight: Our partner provided a dataset for students to analyze emergency text messages and classify them using natural language processing. This project comes from the CTO’s field work using machine learning to improve relief efforts for major natural disasters.
  • IBM: Drawing from a dataset of user behavior on IBM’s data science community platform, students can use the IBM Watson platform to build a recommendation engine that personalizes article, dataset, and tutorial suggestions.

“The analysis of large volumes of data is becoming increasingly important for many of our businesses—to better adapt products and services to the wishes of our customers, for example. Having announced more than 15,000 scholarships for courses in data science at Udacity last year, we are now looking forward to being a partner in the new Data Scientist Nanodegree program. Graduates of this course can expect excellent career opportunities at Bertelsmann.” —Immanuel Hermreck, Chief Human Resources Officer of Bertelsmann

Experts-in-Residence

Throughout the program, students will have the unique opportunity to engage with Udacity Experts-in-Residence. Our experts are an elite group of data scientist practitioners working at some of the most innovative organizations in the world. They are highly influential individuals, who will directly support students by answering live questions in weekly sessions, offering career support and guidance, and delivering the kind of actionable insights only working professionals can provide.

  • Belinda Bennett – Data Scientist at Airbnb
  • Prashant Dhingra  Machine Learning Expert at Google
  • Stephen Morton – Data Scientist at Slack

“IBM and Udacity’s partnership brings together the best of both worlds—IBM’s leading-edge technology, and Udacity’s community of learners. Together, we are providing early learners with industry-leading data science skills, and platforms of the future, today.” —Joel Horwitz, Global Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, IBM

Graduates in Data Careers

Udacity has long maintained a strong commitment to helping students pursue data careers, and we offer a range of entry points for learners with different skills and goals in our School of Data Science. Today, graduates of Udacity’s data programs hold important jobs across a wide array of fields:

“I got a new job as a Data Science Engineer after graduating from my Nanodegree program.” —Jayashree Sridhar, Data Science Engineer, Buddihealth Technologies

“Udacity gave me the tools to advance my career—I am now spearheading a machine learning research team at my company.” —Matthew Peyrard, JSI Telecom

“I’ve started a new career path, and I’m now able to practice my analytics/machine learning skills on a daily basis.” —Qiaole Zhao, Data Scientist, Advanced Analytics CoE at Shell

“I succeeded in landing a new job as a business intelligence analyst.” —Drew Hontz, Business Intelligence Analyst, AEG

“The skills I learned helped me land a Lead Data Science role before I even graduated.” —Ekaterina Volkova-Volkmar, Head of Data Science, MEDIA Protocol Ltd

Every day new Udacity graduates take on exciting roles in the world of data. Sohrab Rahimi is now a Senior Data Scientist at McKinsey & Company. Laura Ni works as a Data Analyst at Apple. Binjie Lai is a Data Science Manager at Adobe. Byron Kiriibwa is now a Business Analyst at Amazon. Ephrem Kidanemariam works as a Data Engineer and Administrator at Starbucks. These students are all making extraordinary strides in their careers.

Data Analyst Nanodegree program graduates reported an average increase of $17,000 in annual salary.*

We look forward to celebrating the next generation of graduates as they emerge from the Data Scientist Nanodegree program to make their marks in the world.

Program Details

Enrollment is now open for the Udacity Data Scientist Nanodegree program, and the classroom opened on June 5, 2018.

Term One is “Machine Learning for Data Scientists.” Across three sections, students focus on Supervised Learning, Deep Learning, and Unsupervised Learning. Featured projects include using Kaggle to build an algorithm for identifying charity donors, and creating an image classifier. Term Two is “Applied Data Science,” and the focus is on solving problems with data science, as well as software and data engineering. As a capstone project, students build their own data science portfolio project.

Update: Our original Data Scientist Nanodegree program has been updated, and now is two separate programs to offer students more flexibility; the Intro to Machine Learning Nanodegree Program for those new to ML, and the Data Scientist Nanodegree program for those who are already familiar with ML concepts. We hope this change enables students to focus on what’s most important to them!

The Data Scientist Nanodegree program is for students who possess strong programming and data analysis skills, and is positioned as the next step for graduates of the Data Analyst Nanodegree program. Those interested in advanced analytics without programming are encouraged to consider the Business Analyst Nanodegree program, and beginners are invited to explore our Data Foundations Nanodegree program.
