“A ‘Traditional’ Degree Didn’t Matter as Long as I Could Code”

Neil, whose journey from shelf-stacking to software engineering you can read here, has some especially great advice for other aspiring software engineers: update your online presence and create a website with a project portfolio!

Neil elaborates,

After working on my skills, I basically updated my CV online. Created a website with example projects on it, and ended up with about 5 phone calls a day from agents.

There was a real shortage of C# developers in the UK and the fact that I didn’t have a ‘traditional’ degree didn’t matter as long as I could code.

I would advise anyone considering a career in web development to start by getting their own domain name as soon as possible. Having an example page to show what you can do, no matter how little will set you apart from the competition.
