Ubuntu 14.04 VM Setup

We are providing you with an Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit) Virtual Machine (VM) which will be used by TA's for grading your projects. It is not required that you use this VM to develop your projects; however, your projects will be built, executed, and graded using this VM. So, it is recommended, that you at least build and run your projects on this VM before submittal. If you have multiple computers, then install this VM on the computer with the fastest processor(s) and most memory.

  1. Download and install the latest version of VirtualBox for your operating system. You can download VirtualBox at the Virtual Box downloads page
  2. Download the Ubuntu 14.04 VM
    • The VM is in a .ova format which can be added directly to VirtualBox
    • The image is ~2.5 GB in size so it is advised that you connect your computer to the Internet via a wired connection for a faster download
    • If the download is especially slow, setup your computer to download the image overnight.
  3. In VirtualBox select File -> Import Appliance and select the .ova you just downloaded
  4. VirtualBox will show you the VM settings and you can then click Import.
  5. Next, ensure that you have at least 2048 MB of memory allocated to the VM and at least 1 CPU allocated
    • Using more memory is recommended if possible
    • You can check these settings by selecting the VM in the left side bar and clicking Settings
    • The memory and processor settings are under the System tab. See the following screenshots for reference:
