Introducing Udacity Blitz

Today we are introducing Udacity Blitz, a new service directly connecting companies with top engineers who develop and fully manage custom software projects. Udacity Blitz teams build mobile apps, websites, and provide data services for innovative companies that need to move fast and get quality results. Companies have the option to hire Udacity Blitz engineers (called Blitzers) for their teams at any time, with no restrictions or fees.

Udacity Blitz gives Nanodegree program alumni new opportunities to apply their skills, add to their resumes, and earn money, while at the same time presenting clients with direct access to the best talent, and a clear path to hire that talent for their teams.

“Udacity Blitz is a service we need in today’s rapidly changing corporate landscape.  They truly put their engineers first, and it was a pleasure to work with them on our mobile project.” —Arianna Huffington, Founder and CEO, Thrive Global

The Gig Economy

The job market is changing dramatically. By the year 2020, more than 40 percent of the American workforce, or 60 million people, will be independent workers—freelancers, contractors, and temporary employees, according to the Intuit 2020 report. McKinsey estimates that 162 million people in Europe and the United States (20-30% of workers) engage in some form of independent work today.

By offering a transparent business model in which companies get to know their engineering teams and have the ability to hire them with no fees, Udacity Blitz helps both engineers and employers benefit from this rapidly changing landscape.

Full-Time Hiring at No Cost

The story of Udacity graduate Danny Arvizu and Optimista in Chicago is an example of what Blitz makes possible. When Daniel Contreras, founder and CEO of Optimista, started a project with Udacity Blitz, his number one priority was getting his website up and running. Through Udacity Blitz, Daniel developed a working relationship with Danny Arvizu, a Front-End Web Developer Nanodegree graduate who was working as a Blitzer. Daniel recognized Danny’s talent and hired him after the project.

“When you go online and try to find someone, you don’t know if they’re going to be good, or if they can deliver. The value of Udacity Blitz is that once I worked with Danny, I had a vetted resource.” —Daniel Contreras, Founder and CEO, Optimista

“The best part of Udacity Blitz was the work experience. I learned so much about how to collaborate with other people, how to work with a project manager, how to work with a client.” —Danny Arvizu, Udacity Nanodegree alum now at Optimista

The Best, Most Qualified Developers

99designs, the leading online marketplace for design services with over one million active designers, has selected Udacity Blitz as their app development partner. Now, when you get your mobile app designed at 99designs.com, you get the option to have Udacity Blitz build it.

Blitzers working on a recent 99designs’ client projects developed a mobile app in just three weeks and had it live on the Apple app store. As 99designs CEO Patrick Llewellyn puts it:

“App design is an opportunity that we’re looking to address, and to be able to do that matched with the best, most qualified developers out there through Udacity Blitz is a significant opportunity for us.”

Other companies already working with Udacity Blitz include the design agency AJ&Smart, German weather site Wetter.com, Alphabet Inc.’s urban innovation platform Sidewalk Labs, financial mobile app Astra, Los Angeles recording studio Sundown Sessions, and many more.

How Udacity Blitz Works

Companies propose a project via blitz.com. Udacity Blitz provides a fixed price estimate, staffs a customized team, and guarantees the work or 100 percent is refunded. A project manager makes sure the project is completed on time, and communicates frequently throughout the process. Companies enjoy full visibility into the project, and build working relationships with Udacity Blitzers. Once the project is complete, companies have the option to continue working with the team on new projects, or to hire the engineers full-time.

Today’s announcement comes on the heels of a series of new Udacity Nanodegree programs in areas like Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Self-Driving Cars, which give students the ability to learn cutting-edge skills and connects them with employers like Mercedes Benz and IBM Watson. With this launch, Udacity underscores its commitment to connecting great talent to great jobs—on Udacity Blitz projects, and beyond.
